Looking for interesting podcasts to pass the time since I'm on the road quite a bit. What are your favorites? I'll definitely check out the "Serial" podcast after reading that thread. I like a good history podcast but open to anything. Just curious to know what your favorites are in any genre. Comedy? Stories? Mysteries? Performing Arts?

Some of my favorites:
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - Phenomenal. Incredibly compelling history series.
Ricky Gervais show - Karl Pilkington is the funniest person is the world of people who have no idea how funny they are.
History of Rome - a long series and thorough recap of Rome's History

I'm also a huge Hardcore History fan. Some other history-related ones I've enjoyed:

12 Byzantine Rulers, by Lars Brownworth
http://12byzantinerulers.com/

Norman Centuries, also by Lars Brownworth
http://normancenturies.com/

I though the previously-mentioned We're Alive (a zombie apocalypse story) started out strong but, honestly, the ending made me wish I hadn't invested the time. It's here if you want to sample it:

My current favorite political-related podcast is Mad Dogs and Englishmen (a libertarian-themed podcast by National Review writers Charles C.W. Cooke and Kevin Williamson):

Almost forgot, but since you mentioned history -

Not really a podcast, but Yale University has made a lot of class lectures available for download. I downloaded and enjoyed listening to the Introduction to Ancient Greek History course lectures:

Sex,
Serial-The topic of season one is an investigation into a 1999 Baltimore murder. Koenig has said, Serial is "about the basics: love and death and justice and truth. All these big, big things."[2] She also has noted, "this is not an original idea. Maybe in podcast form it is, and trying to do it as a documentary story is really, really hard. But trying to do it as a serial, this is as old as Dickens."[3]

I just started, good so far. Keeps me engaged.

I thought everyone was saying Cereal. I'm like, not listen about breakfast in a bowl.

Stuff You Should Know is my favorite. Each episode is devoted to a topic ranging from history, culture, science, general knowledge, etc.

It's a cool little tool for--duh--stuff everyone should know. Plus, Josh & Chuck have an amazing chemistry. They tend to go off on 2 minute tangents that are thoroughly entertaining. They definitely make my commute better.

Mary Ann Winkowski, E. Michael Jones, and Malachi Martin are worth seeking out for audio / Youtube interviews, as well as writers for the Dissident Right / NxR / Dark Enlightenment should you desire to go outside the mainstream.

I recommend Jesse Ventura and Roger Stone, along with Russ Baker and Philip F. Nelson, for contemporary alt. U. S. history, from Operation 40 (1958) to present. Get their books, especially Stone and Nelson. This is hardcore sh*t that will keep you up at night, and they've done many hundreds of interviews and known many of the players. (Updated paperbacks recommended).

If you are interested in literature, spend time with arguments in favor of DeVere's authorship of Shakespere. The case is very strong (begin with Mark Anderson).

For religion, understand the traditionalist Catholic position concerning Judiasm, and read Sand's Invention of the Jewish People and Jones's The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit, and his Barren Metal. (Sand is Jewish and hated in Israel for getting the Khazar history into an academic press publication).

For alt. WWII, listen to Pat Buchanan, and the critics of Churchill (a perfect example of a god-man now but who did many terrible things and had a fetish for war).

All of these people are great talkers with impressive things to say, and should be considered.

Edit: some examples of alt.

I'll 2nd the Stuff You Should Know podcast. My favorite so far on my walk to work.

Another I really like is NPRs Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. I literally laugh out loud sometimes on my walk and get strange looks from people.

Have to check out some of these others.

Radiolab - really well produced focus on science, some philosophy, good stories - reminds me of this American life

this American life - stories and investigative journalism

hardcore history

Serial

freakonomics

Stuff you should know podcasts - Poor production value, sounds like a couple people sitting around a laptop talking into the webcam microphone without a ton of organization but they cover lots of good topics. I just wish they could make it easier to listen to with better transitions and structure. (They need to take some notes from radio lab)

More people should listen to Mike and Tom Eat Snacks. Basically Tom Cavanaugh and Michael Ian Black picking a snack, eating it, and rating it while riffing for an hour. Hilarious stuff.

My list includes them, and:
- serial
- stuff you should know
- hard core history
- common sense
- radiolab
- Occasional Joe Organ or Nerdiest, depending on guest
