One of the most moving scenes I can remember was the 'Elegy for Dunkirk' scene from Atonement. I know sometimes long single tracking shots can be gimmicky, but I thought this really helped capture this whole scene. It's worth 4 minutes...

I think the scene in Return of the King with Pippin singing while Faramir and the knights charge the orcs is a great one.

Edit: didn't see the post on page 1
Which were you talking about here? There are 2 very impressive single shot scenes in the movie. At the end with the child, and the car chase scene.

Good Will Hunting has some great scenes.

Agree.

Unfortunately, one thing this thread points out is that there had been a dearth of great movies in the last ten years.
There have been plenty. Some scenes from recent movies that come to mind:

the final scene of the movie Whiplash (2014)
the argument scene in Before Midnight (2013)
the "No Diggity" scene in Pitch Perfect (2012)...obviously a joke, but I frickin love that scene
the final scene of Toy Story (2010)
the final dance scene in Black Swan (2010)
the "aim for the bushes" scene in The Other Guys (2010)
the bar scene/jew hunter scene in Inglorious Basterds (2009)
the bank heist scene in The Dark Knight (2008)
the break up scene from Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
the "I drink your milkshake" scene from There Will Be Blood (2007)
the opening scene of Casino Royale (2006)
the "V speech" in V for Vendetta (2006)

As for the small screen, my favorites all time are:

The **** scene/Where's Wallace scene from the Wire
Tyrion on trial/Mountain vs Red Viper/Red Wedding scenes in Game of Thrones
The projects/the "shootout" scene in True Detective
The saving the boy scene from Hell and High Water episode of ER
Dr. Greene performs an emergent C-section on patient he screwed up on and patient dies in Love's Labor lost episode of ER
"Where do you think we are?" from My Screw Up episode of Scrubs
"How come he don't want me, man?"
The chili ingredient reveal in Scott Tenorman Must Die episode of South Park
The final scene of Twin Peaks "How's Annie?"
The hand job formula scene in Silicon Valley

Good call on the Scrubs scene, Not Yet Dr. Ag. I would also say the scene in the episode "My Own Personal Jesus" when Turk takes off running towards the star in the park and finds the girl with HELLP syndrome under the Christmas tree.

So many good one listed.

Band of Brothers, "Why We Fight" - when they find the concentration camp. Also the scene were the German general speaks to his troops.

I was gonna say this re: why we fight, but yes the general addressing the troops is good too. I just watched bob and can't get over how good it was.

The Wire - Omar testifying against Bird and the "where's Wallace?" scene

Any scene with Omar.

6 minute scene shot in one take from true detective when they're in the projects in Beaumont (I think it's supposed to be Beaumont).

Yep that's a good one. That scene ran through my head many times before football games this season.

Is the "Where's Wallace?" scene that keeps getting referenced from the Wire the same scene as "I'm a real n***a" ? If not, I think it has to be included.
ellebee

I don't remember that.

I may have the wording slightly off, but I'm referring to Wallace's last scene in the show.

It's a different scene. "Where's Wallace" is later when deangelo is asking stringer where Wallace is.

Love, love, love this scene!

Also from Scrubs, the ending montage on the "real" last episode...When JD is watching what he hopes his life will be like.

It's pretty recent, but this scene from Silicon Valley deserves to be up there!

I'm surprised this hasn't made it up there:

Charge up the hill in "Glory".

They all knew they were dead and pushed up a sandy hill into a fort anyway. Throw in the soundtrack and it's just a great scene.

Also I love to throw the trivia that it's the only movie I know of that both Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman were in.

This trial where John Adams defended the Brits after the Boston Massacre, hell of a scene. This is from HBO but on Amazon Prime. every American should see it.

Both those scenes. Scrub literally directed me into medicine. Thank the Lord for that show

I've been trying to decide whether to show this scene to my son, who is ten. We are home schooling for about 6 months.

What say you all?

Use your own experience. Heck I'm listening. I'm undecided. We're taking him to the DDay museum in New Orleans in the spring, so should I let him see the scene?

I just now decided not to let him see the tar and feathering scene from John Adams, though he will get to see much of the rest of that miniseries.

I'm only 21 so no kids here but. I remember my parents told me to leave the room during that scene a loong time ago lol. I was still pretty young when I first saw it though.

I'd say no. Maybe in a few years. Heck, I saw it in the theatre in college and it had lasting affects on me.

I think you could use less disturbing materials...let your son be a kid.

^

My son has seen it he is 10, and IMO it was educational & he wanted to see it cause both of his Great Grandfather's fought in WW II. One was in the Army under Patton & the other was Marine and fought in the Pacific. He actually did a presentation for 4th grade History on WW II and showed both my grandfather's uniforms, medals, journels, and talked about what battles they fought at. Also I'm a Marine and my Dad was Marine who fought in Vietnam, so he's grown up around a military family and took watching the movie well.

I think I'll save it. We'll see the museum in April and he can start with the black and white photos.

I still cannot come to grips with many vivid war images. Those and the Holocaust can wait a little longer.
