How long do you want to ignore this user?
Just finished listening to this audiobook. I thought it was excellent. I downloaded it to listen to on 3 hour drive to inlaws for 4th of July weekend, and basically couldn't stop listening to it. Stayed up until 4 am listening last night.

Anyone else read or listen to it?

I googled it because I thought it would probably make an awesome movie if they did it like Gravity and I see that the movie rights have been sold to 20th Century Fox and there are negotiations for Ridley Scott to direct and Matt Damon to star in the film version.

I would highly recommend it. Its science fiction, and a little heavy on science but not really to the point where you get lost in the science or have to be an astrophysicist to understand it. Even though its science fiction, I thought it was pretty realistic (I'm not an astronaut though so I'm sure liberties were taken in the interest of storytelling).

Its more just a story about survival and the human will to survive and human nature to help other humans.

Basic no spoilers plot is the story takes place during the 3rd manned mission to Mars in the not too distant future. Bad storm causes the mission to abort, one astronaut is hit with flying debris during evacuation, lost, presumed dead, and eventually left on Mars by the rest of the crew. The story is told in first person by the astronaut through logs at first, and eventually picks up in 3rd person format back on Earth at NASA and on the spaceship returning the rest of the crew from Mars to Earth.

After googling, it also turns out its the author's first novel and he self-published it at first. I thought that was extremely cool as well.

I had a friend recommended this book to me. Actually just downloaded it for my flight tomorrow. Looking forward to it.

Good book. I would recommend highly. Thought it was a good read for someone like myself that typically stays in the non fiction survival genre.

i liked it a lot. i read when it came out (when it was still self-published). really good "hard science" sci-fi. reminded me of a combination of robinson crusoe and apollo 13. great story that reads like and seems smart enough to be non-fiction.

the author wrote a short story called "the egg" which got some viral popularity a few years back. he's talented, imo.

I really enjoyed this audio book too. It was a very believable and plausible sci fi, with a lot of real science in it too.

Thank you for putting this on my radar. I've done a lot of orbital mechanics/spacecraft dynamics work in grad school, and it sounds like this is right up my alley! (love sci-fi)

Great book. As a rule, I'd say any book that has 2 f-bombs in the first 3 sentences grabs my interest. And it just gets better from there.

I'm curious; does the audiobook version tone down the astronaut's potty-mouth? In the written version, he curses more than me, which is an impressive feat.

Just a warning for those that might like their books written with PG-13 language or might listen to it over a speaker in mixed company.

Have not read the book yet but heard an interview with the author on NPR a couple of months ago. He's an engineer, with a strong science background, and consulted scientists a lot to make the science and engineering in the book as plausible as possible.

He originally wrote the book for fun and gave it away to his friends. People liked it so much they begged him to put it on Amazon so they could download it, these were people who couldn't open his text files. So he originally put it on Amazon for that purpose charging just 99 cents.

The book took off in a huge way, and the rest is history. In the interview the guy indicated that discussions with Hollywood for a movie deal were in progress.

The author said that what he liked most about the book was how he was able to make every solution to a problem the cause of the next problem.

Language is definitely not toned down in audio book. Would not suggest listening to it with small children in listening distance. However I do recommend the audio book because the narrator does a great job capturing the authors humor.

I finished this one about a week ago.

The first 40 pages or so felt slow to me, even though he was already stranded on Mars. But when the NASA POVs first appeared, the book took off for me.

Really, really loved this book.
