Sometime in the late 90's/very early 00's someone made a mix CD with old country songs and labeled it something like 'Dixie Chicken Greatest Hits' (for obvious reasons).

I remember is be pretty popular and getting around though several people copying it for friends. Does anyone remember this and know what songs were on it? I'm trying to make a similar playlist in Spotify.

Thanks

I would be interested in seeing this. Mainly because I want to see how it changed from my time working the front bar and playing music

Can you give us a list of music that you'd play? when did you work there?

I can make the playlist on Spotify and share it so people can play it for free.

Was it Northgate Noise? It was like 2-3 albums of that kind of music.

Awesome.

I added all songs from Northgate Noise Volumes I & II to a spotify playlist and here's the link.

Disclaimer: not stealing the music. Spotify is free on PCs and ~$8 a month to use on mobile devices and you can make/share playlists. Also not affiliated.

Not a bad list. Some stuff I would change. I would add stuff from

stuff from Clint Black's Killing Time
stuff from Lyle Lovett's Self Titled or Pontiac
Long Haired Redneck
Drinking my baby off my mind
Dixie Chicken by Little Feat
Clyde by waylon jennings
Anything by Bob Wills
John Conley's Rose Colored Glasses

It has been close to 20 years since I flipped through those records. I am sure I will think of others.

We also used to play a crap load of stuff from Buffett Old Testament (anything before Fruitcakes)

Duncan Idaho, do you have Spotify on any computers? I've made this a collaborative playlist so you should be able to add tracks.

I've been listening to Steve Earl while making this playlist and it reminded me how much I like his music. I stumbled into Lafitte's Blacksmith on Bourbon St. last summer and he was playing on the patio and I had no clue who he was but just though about how this weird looking dude was pretty good. Then I saw him on an episode of Treme a couple months later and it took me a couple days to figure out where I recognized him from.

It's "Good Night Irene" and it should be on that list.

No, they never played that, but they have been playing Good Night Irene at closing for a while now.

Northgate Noise by Bottlecap Records has four volumes (CD's) and does include Goodnight Irene as the last song on CD 4. I don't think they are making anymore of them but you may still be able to find some somewhere.

I worked at the Chicken from 1979-82...need to add some of the following:

* Coe...If That Ain't Country
* Hank Jr....A Country Boy Can Survive

I'm proud of the fact that I couldn't identify the last song of the night as Irene or Eileen. My belly was normally full of pitchers lone star beer!!

I also remember "Why Don't We Get Drunk" by Jimmy Buffet.

There were times where we'd throw in something completely off base to stir the pot.

The most successful, by far, was Staying Alive by the Bee Gees. We decided to tone it down a little after we realized that it really could have ended up as a mob! Drunk Aggies slamming their bones down to boogie on table tops while singing falsetto at the top of their lungs wasn't as safe an idea as we thought it would be but damn it was fun!!!!

I tried Beat It one night and that was almost as dangerous. Almost.

I would man the front bar and play an hour straight of Bob Wills and other Texas Swing Music! Good times!
Duncan Idaho
How long do you want to ignore this user?
There were certain albums that you put on just let play during the day.

Most of Buffet's pre-volcano work.
Bob Wills and the texas play boys for the last time.
Lyle Lovett
Waylon's greatest hits
steve earle's guitar town

I don't think I ever enjoyed a crappier job more.

I seem to foggily remember that Rose Colored Glasses was played when the back bar closed for the night. About an hour before Goodnight Irene played.

It is funny how things are constantly changing but everyone swears "we've always done it like this"

There is no way would would have closed the back bar before last call.

I am sure pilgram would look at some of the **** we did and think what the ****? Just like i am sure I would have no idea what the guys working there now would are doing

Duncan...we were probably under a tighter leash...we never knew when Don would show up...if he came in and Alabama or George Strait was playing, he'd get real pissed.

My only real run-in with Don in the four years I worked for him involved "Marina del Ray" playing when he came in early one Friday night. A really cute girl I was chasing after had asked me to play it and in comes Don...I about shat! He chews on me, I explain, he asks where the girl is, he goes over and chews on her (with a grin on his face), she blushes and laughs, he comes back over and chews on me some more, tells me "...if you have to play that new crap, at lesat play 'Amarillo by Morning' or 'Blame it on Mexico'...", tells me I better get laid to make it worth the risk, then stomps on up to the office.

The object of my lust comes over and tells me Don was very nice and told her she needed to be very nice to me since I knowingly risked my job for her.

As someone else said, I never had so much fun at such a crappy job, and I do miss Don. As hard as it may be to believe, I've had a lot of worse boss since him.
