I am aware it is made up fantasy and not real life (no one wins all the time like he does), but he only went to his home town in an emergency.

I think that aspect of the show is very accurate. How many politicians do you think actually live in their hometown? Once they get to Washington, they get comfortable and stay. After a term or two, politicians just become part of the Washington machine, and the longer they stay, they less they have in common with those they purport to represent.
