Holy balls. Wow.

I had at least a couple dozen bolts with 300 yards of my travel trailer last night based on time between flash and sound being near zero.

Haven't been in the industry in a while, but back in the day, the usda had regulations against butchering cattle that couldn't stand up under their own power (if I remember correctly)

We had this exact thing happen in the late 80s early 90s...7 of them.

Wolves, coyotes and buzzards would not touch them... based on that observation, I would say no, they cannot be butchered.

I would hope/assume they had insurance. They are in the middle of cattle country in South Dakota, in an area prone to losing cattle to weather (early freezes)

Insurance? Maybe for a $20,000 registered females.

Anyone who would write a policy on a cow is an idiot, or the premium would be so high it would be half the cost of the animal per year for a commercial cow.

If there wasn't ag insurance, there would be much fewer farmers and ranchers

It's called crop and livestock insurance. I'm guessing you didn't grow up on a farm or ranch.

Psych is spot on. You can't process/slaughter dead or dying animals. Sadly, those cattle will either be buried or headed to rendering. Very sad for the rancher. Hope he had insurance.
