Feud with Drake
In July 2015, Meek Mill publicly criticized Drake on Twitter, calling him out for not writing his own lyrics. In a series of tweets, the rapper claimed his counterpart used a ghostwriter for the song "R.I.C.O.," off Meek's Dreams Worth More Than Money album.[51] He also admitted that he was upset that Drake didn't promote the album on Twitter, upon its release. "Stop comparing drake to me too.... He don't write his own raps! That's why he ain't tweet my album because we found out," Meek Mill commented.[52][53] Meek Mill had identified the ghostwriter as Quentin Miller, a local rapper from Atlanta.
On July 23, Miller stated on Tumblr that despite working with Drake in the past, he hasn't ghostwritten any of his music and he never will.
Meek Mill's claims received support from Funkmaster Flex an American hip hop DJ, rapper, musician and producer on New York City's Hot 97 radio station. Flex released an audio recording that he claims was a reference track featuring Quentin Miller for Drake's song, 10 Bands.[54]
Drake was supported by 40, Drake's longtime producer, friend and collaborator, who claimed that not only does Drake write his own songs, he has also written #1 records for other artists. "No one is as talented as Drake [there are] countless number ones and songs drake has written for others never mind himself", 40 said on Twitter.[55]
On July 25, 2015, Drake premiered a track, titled "Charged Up" on the Beats 1 OVO Radio Show that is widely seen as a response to Meek Mill's allegations. Drake highlighted Meek Mill's relatively low sales volume and further claimed that the rapper was fading into obscurity. Drake also suggested that Meek is a weaker rapper than his girlfriend, Nicki Minaj.[56][57] Drake also dissed Funkmaster Flex by promoting his rival DJ Clue.
Toronto city councillor Norm Kelly tweeted that Meek Mill was no longer "welcome" to Toronto. On July 28th, 2015, Meek Mill performed in Toronto and was heavily booed and jeered.
Around 5AM EST on July 29, Drake released an aggressive diss track named "Back to Back Freestyle" that further attacked Meek Mill. The track, streamed over 500,000 times in 4 hours, heavily suggested that Meek Mill's relationship with Nicki Minaj is lopsided in Minaj's favor and also further criticized Meek Mill for not responding to "Charged Up" and for relying on Twitter to attack Drake.[58] It was received extremely favorably, securing a 4.8/5 rating on DJBooth.net and a 92% rating on HotNewHipHop, and "#BacktoBack" began trending on Twitter almost immediately.
The track was released for streaming on the OVO SoundCloud account and on Apple Music.[59] Within 12 Hours of release, the track had been streamed 4.5 Million times on SoundCloud alone.
The cover art featured Joe Carter, the Toronto Blue Jays player who hit a walk-off home run against the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1993 World Series, securing back-to-back titles for the Blue Jays.
Many brands, including Burger King and Digicel posted social media promotions or posts that referenced the track and the feud.
On July 30, Meek Mill released a track attacking Drake titled "Wanna Know" through Funkmaster Flex on HOT 97. On "Wanna Know" Meek Mill sampled "reference" tracks that aimed to prove Quentin Miller as Drake's ghostwriter while reasserting his ghostwriting allegations and criticizing Drake for being soft.[60] Meek Mill also dissed AR-AB and Daylyt on the track[61]. The track was popular, trending on Twitter and racking over 2 million streams in under 6 hours. However, the track ws received very poorly on Twitter and by sites like The Daily Beast[62]. It was most commonly criticized for it's delayed release, cliche attacks, shoddy production and occasionally unintelligible and muddled flow.
Drake responded simply by posting an Instagram photo of him laughing[63].
Toronto City Councillor Norm Kelly tweeted "This is the reason people hire ghostwriters. #WeDidntWannaKnow", receiving over 50,000 retweets in under 4 hours[64].
