GN's thread on Allman Brothers vs. Skynyrd prompted a good discussion. So I'll follow up on that with your 5 Southern Rock/Blues favorites.
Mine would be:
Layla - Derek and The Dominoes
That Smell - Skynyrd
Texas Flood - SRV
So Into You - ARS
Caught Up In You - 38 Special

It really hurt leaving In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed off that list. I should have made it a top 6 favorites.

What are you 10 years old? Go pick up a copy of Southern Rock For Dummies and come.back.in about 5 years when you reach puberty.

That's kind of funny coming from the guy who named a song written by a Brit, about his love for another Brit's British wife, as his top "Southern Rock" song.

I thought the same about his Derek and the Dominoes pick, but to be fair, he did say blues, so...I let it slide. I'm sure someone in the band was from south of somewhere.

As for my own list;

1. Marshall Tucker Band - Can't You See
2. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man
3. Allman Brothers - Ramblin' Man
4. Doobie Brothers - Black Water
5. Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' With Disaster

I damn near put "Flirtin' With Disaster" in mine as well. "Train, Train," is another good one but I thought for a long time that it was a Skynyrd tune.

What about Pure Prairie League? Are they Southern Rock or country?

I took the title to mean southern rock/blues, as in southern rock or southern blues.

If he meant it as southern rock or blues rock, that would certainly open the door for Clapton, but it would also cast a much wider net overall as far the discussion is concerned.

(And yes there were a couple southern born musicians in Derek and Dominoes, plus Duane Allman who contributed to the musical composition of a number of their songs without actually being a member of the band. But Layla was written by Clapton and Jim Gordon who was from Los Angeles)

I think you could throw them in with Southern Rock. Amie is a little more country sounding than some others on here, but it's definitely got some rock n roll soul.

As long as we're talking about great southern rock songs by bands that aren't traditionally southern rock bands, I'll go ahead and throw out Seven Bridges Road by the Eagles. Love that song.

The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

I know a lot of The Band is Canadian, but Levon Helm was from Arkansas, so I'm hoping he and the subject matter of the song get them into the conversation.

Curtis Lowe - Lynryd Skynryd
Midnight Rider - Allman brothers
Fire on the mountain - Marshall Tucker band
Simple Man - Lynryd Skynryd
Can't you see - Marshall Tucker

Ballad of a Southern Man by Whiskey Myers is a great tune and that band reminds me of Skynryd a lot. Check them out if you haven't heard of them.

If a band fronted by Eric Clapton can be considered Southern Rock I don't know why a song about the South sung by Levon shouldn't get some consideration.

A few that need to part of the conversation -
Whipping Post - Allman Brothers
There Goes Another Love Song - Outlaws
Green Grass & High Tides - The Outlaws
Train, Train - Blackfoot
Highway Song - Blackfoot

The Black Crowes' cover of Velvet Underground's "Oh, Sweet Nuthin'" made me question everything I have ever known. Ok maybe not that transcendent but damn close. I don't know where you'd categorize that.

Though most of us Ags might not admit it "Sweet Home Alabama" has to be near the top especially with the verse toward Neil Young that a Southern man don't need him around.

Not trying to start an argument here but is CCR considered southern rock? I know they aren't actually from the south but they have some songs that seem to fit the genre.

I think it's more about sound than where the band's from.

We've got Blund Faith and Led Zeppelin on here, I think CCR can be considered

List also says blues (influenced) bands. I would not consider half my list southern rock haha.

I thought about putting a caveat. Much of their sound certainly fits the mold.

Travelin' Band by CCR is a great song.

Eerie experience for me as it came on the radio shortly before midnight as the lights of downtown Memphis loomed in the distance while I was on a cross-country road trip several years ago:

quote:
Seven thirty seven comin' out of the sky
Won't you take me down to Memphis on a midnight ride
I want to move
Playin' in a travelin' band

When I started this thread the intent was songs from bands with a southern rock/blues sound. Lots of good suggestions here. Love the Doobies and the Eagles but I would probably classify them as more west coast rock. Again, just my opinion. CCR probably fits the southern rock sound. As to why I had Layla on my list if you listen to the album it definately has a southern rock feel. And Duane Allman was in the band.
