38 Special. Both Allman Brothers and Skynyrd do some killer stuff. Would probably depend on my mood that night. Tonight says Skynyrd.
In addition to complicating.things with 38.Special, what about Derek & The Dominoes?

Skynyrd is the only band I've ever heard with three guitarists where they are all adding something to the song song after song. I can't think of a better way to describe them. I just think that the original Lynyrd Skynyrd was on a different level than every other Southern Rock band that I've heard to this day.

I love the Allman Brothers, but I don't think that any of their lineups has ever been on par with Skynyrd after Steve Gains joined until the plane crash.

Saw a Skynyrd/Allman Brothers double billing the night before I took my SATs back in the day. The Allman Brothers played til almost 3am. I was still drunk when I walked in to take my SATs the next morning. My SAT score is what got me into A&M.

Therefore, the correct answer is both.

That Smell may be one of the best rock songs ever. I know everyone goes crazy over Freebird but for me.That Smell just absolutely rocks.

IMO Skynyrd gets the slight edge. Love both though.

I would add Mountain Jam to the Allman Brothers list, and the 1976 Fox Theater version of Crossroads to the Skynyrd list.

If I'm ever in a bad mood, this song can cheer me up quick. One of my favorite Skynyrd songs....

The last few Allman Bros lineups have been phenomenal too, with Butch's son Derek, the fantastic guitarist Jimmy Herring, and Herring's old Aquarium Rescue Unit band mate (and inarguably top 5 best bass player alive) Oteil Burbridge

We aren't talking about the last few incarnations.

Duane. Dickie. Gregg.

Rossington. Collins. Van Zant. Gaines.

The more I think about it, I agree it's not really even close. I think LS has some catchier tunes, but Allman Bros are IMO more talented musicians. They just jam harder

I am not trying to compare new lineups, just wanted to point out to folks that there are some masterful players that are rocking with the Allman bros lately

Can't sleep, and this thread got me thinking about old times. So I went digging through my closet of old stuff, and found some artifacts of my youth, including this necklace, which I wore daily as a teenager.

I like them both. The Allman Brothers Band were probably better pure musicians, but (Freebird aside) Skynyrd could generally finish a song without ten minutes of jam band wankery, so they had better singles.

Allman Brothers Band. I'm referring to era with Duane though. It's crazy if you look at the footprint he has on music from that era with how short he was alive. People forget he played on and wrote almost all off Layla with Clapton.

Oops my bad. Yeah, the aforementioned Oteil Burbridge plays with the Tedeschi Trucks band too. I remember going to see Susan years ago before she was with Derek (he was still a kid). Great performance, she has this young Bonnie Raitt quality to her voice.
