It's either 10 or 58

10.

But I was a liberal arts major for the specific purpose of avoiding math, so I'm probably wrong.

I guess I'll be the first to say 58...

6^2 / 2(3) + 4 = 58

6^2 / (2(3)) + 4 = 10

Easy.

I can't even figure out how you would get 58

People are dividing before multiplying. So they would get 36 divided by 2. Then times 3. Then plus 4, which equals 58.

BUT YOU MULTIPLY BEFORE YOU DIVIDE

6 squared, divided by 2, times 3, plus 4 equals 58.

And you don't always multiply before you divide, it depends on which comes first left to right in the problem

No you don't. Multiplication and division are done in the same step, from left to right.

Wtf taught you that? When dealing with multiplication and division, the order goes left to right. The answer is 58.

PEMDAS, or the order of operations, dictates:

1)Parentheses - (3) = 3, and 2(3) is just 2 x 3 which comes later.
2)Exponent, so 6^2 = 36
3)Multipy and Divide. These are equal, so take them in the order you come to them.
We have 36 / 2 * 3 = 18 * 3 = 54
4)Add and Subtract, also equal, so 54 + 4 = 58.

If you wanted 10, then 2(3) would have been written as (2x3), but they weren't.

58

I say 58, but the expression as written is intentionally ambiguous.

Order of operations goes
1. Everything inside of parentheses, following the normal order of operations.
2. Exponent
3. Multiply & Divide
4. Add & Subtract

Where you have multiple instances of operations that happen simultaneously, convention is to go left to right.

If the person intended for the 2x3 to take precedent over 36/2, an additional set of parentheses is required.

X^2 / 2 (3) + 4 = 58
X^2 / 2 (3) = 54. (Subtract the 4)
X^2 / 2 = 18 (divide the 3)
X^2 = 36 (multiple the 2)
X= 6 (sqrt of 36)

X^2 / 2 (3) + 4 = 10
X^2 / 2 (3) = 6 (subtract 4)
X^2 / 2 (3) = 2 (divide the 3)
X^2 = 4 (multiply the 2)
X= 2 (sqrt of 4)

Same answer for me

Mathematics is the language of clarity and precision.

The fact there is a debate at all indicates a poorly written expression. There should always be only one interpretation.

If the answer is meant to be 10 then it is poorly written, because the answer to it as it is written is 58

Why is there a debate though the rules tell you what to do. The only debate is from people who don't know the rules. So it's not a poor question just poorly educated people

This is correct. There is absolutely no debate.

Wrong. It means people don't know how to work an easy math problem.
