If he were going to cry it should be about the conventional bombing attacks. Over the course of the war those killed more people.

Also, I don't know that Japan does that much "complaining" about WWII.

They protest American presence in Okinawa all the time. It's mostly main land Japanese people that come to protest though. The Okinawans are very peaceful and know we saved their asses from an extremely cruel Japanese regime. It's just when some dumb ass in the military rapes a local girl that we get a lot of resistance.

I'm just glad it's not another Benny thread.

Just ask little Kenny if he thinks it's ok to hit Dad with a baseball bat. When he says no, ask him what he thinks should be the punishment for hitting Dad with the baseball bat.

Then ask him if he thinks its ok if his friend breaks into your garage and cuts his bicycle into little tiny pieces. Again ask what the punishment should be.

Finally, ask him if it's ok if our friends, the Japanese, start dropping bombs on our ships at Pearl Harbor. Ask him what he thinks the punishment should be.

Relate the conflict to what he knows and understands and you'll have a much bigger effect on his views than his teacher.

And if he gives the Asian kid a bloody nose at school the next day, you'll know Kenny got the message.

That's about a whole lot more than WWII. Okinawa has the heaviest concentration of bases in Japan (approximately 70% of all bases in Japan are in Okinawa), and bases cover about 20% of the Island's land area. Several of these bases are in densely populated urban areas. In the past, there have been a fair number of high profile crimes committed by servicemen (issues with drunk people doing stupid things led to an off base drinking ban that lasted from 2012 to this past December and servicemen still can't drink off base from midnight to 5 am). I think those issues are much more the cause of the protests than the war.

I'm well aware of that, I've spent quiet a bit of time there. I was there when one of the high profile rapes happened and saw the protest myself. We've occupied that island in such a density since WWII and I think the main landers that protest are still bitter about the occupation and use any excuse they can find to protest.

When were you there Forester? I was there from 96-98 and 01-08, plus another three months in 10.

I wasn't there that long, about 2 months in 2009 and two weeks in 2012. I was a military contractor at the time. I really liked it there, but I can see how you could get island fever on PCS.

I loved it there! After 10 years there are still things I want to do and places I haven't seen.
