There’s a reason the Aggies never backed off in their pursuit of Dallas Jesuit linebacker Jordan Mastrogiovanni. The Dallas-area standout is a gifted linebacker prospect and has prototypical, SEC measurables. He’s a potential impact player as a freshman season in Defensive Coordinator Mark Snyder’s 4-3 defense Coach Kevin Sumlin and Snyder prioritized the 6-3, 228-pounder last spring and continued to recruit him long after he originally committed to Oklahoma despite early offers from the Aggies, Notre Dame and LSU. Mastrogiovanni is a bigger, more physical linebacker than those A&M previously recruited, yet he runs well for a tall, almost 230-pound MIKE ‘backer. Jordan not only does an excellent job attacking lead blockers and ball-carriers, has good range and excels at shedding blocks and sifting through traffic to make tackles. He’ll fill out very quickly in Larry Jackson’s off-season program, so he’ll probably begin his freshman season in the 6-3, 235-pound range. By the time he’s in year two in Aggieland, he may be about a 6-3, 245 pounder inside linebacker capable of running through blocks that would knock most linebackers off their path. Jordan is also very instinctive and capable of quickly diagnosing plays and attacking running backs or quarterbacks. Because of his size and aggressive nature, Mastrogiovanni tends to arrive at the point of attack quickly and explode through the target. Again, we’re talking about a prototypical middle ‘backer who has the speed and feet to eventually man the WILL spot, as well. A two-time 9-5A first team All-District selection, Jordan earned 5A Honorable Mention All-State honors as a senior.
