In Arnold, Defensive Coordinator Mark Snyder, Defensive Line Coach Terry Price and the Wrecking Crew are getting a strong, productive defender who also possesses a laundry list of intangibles. First and foremost, Jay is a relentless defensive lineman who plays with reckless abandon. His unique background as a championship-level MMA fighter and high school wrestler aids Arnold in keeping hands of would-be blockers away from his body. It’s also a key part of why he’s able to leverage offensive linemen so well while maintaining a stable, solid base. On the gridiron, Jay’s strengths include an outstanding frame that will enable him to play at either 6-4 or 6-5 and north of 285 pounds. Arnold — who reminds me of a younger version of former TCU and NFL standout Aaron Schobel — is equally effective against the run and pass and capable of playing outside or inside in Snyder’s 4-3 scheme. When not taking on blockers, Arnold is usually hitting the mats. A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student and submission specialist, Jay is also an accomplished high school wrestler. He defeated Texas Longhorn signee Kent Perkins – the state’s top-ranked O-lineman and a 6-5, 290-pounder - in two of their three head-to-head matches. An honor roll student with a 3.5-plus grade-point average, Arnold chose the Aggies over Ole Miss, Baylor, Northwestern, Purdue, SMU, Tulsa and Wake Forest. OU, LSU, Oklahoma State and Tech showed heavy interest heading into the spring evaluation period. As a sophomore, Jay tallied 42 tackles and four sacks. He landed on the radar of several major college programs, however, after a breakout junior season. The then-235/240-pounder racked up 44 tackles and eye-catching totals of 13 sacks and four forced fumbles as a junior.
