The SEC Quarterback Power Rankings are starting to divide themselves into "haves" and "have-nots," much in the same way the conference's team standings have done.
I'm not sure you'd want anyone on this list outside of the top five quarterbacking your team unless you had no other option. You might even cut that list after the top four.
There's still plenty of time for this list to shake itself up, but players on both ends would have to either vastly improve or decline for that to happen. It's certainly possible.
Here are the updated rankings, for the week of Oct. 19-25, 2014:
1. Dak Prescott, Mississippi State
Team record: 6-0, 3-0 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 96-156 (61.5 percent), 1,478 yards, 14 TDs, 4 INTs; Rushing -- 106-576 (5.4 avg), 8 TDs
Analysis: Mississippi State had a bye last week, which allowed the physical Prescott to rest up for the stretch run. The Bulldogs' second half begins with a trip to Kentucky on Saturday, so the Heisman front-runner could put up more big numbers.
Last week: 1
2. Bo Wallace, Ole Miss
Team record: 7-0, 4-0 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 137-209 (65.6), 1,899 yards, 17 TDs, 6 INTs; Rushing -- 67-122 (1.8), 2 TDs
Analysis: Wallace was just OK in a victory over Tennessee last week, failing to complete at least 58 percent of his passes for the first time all year. His team continues to dominate, however, and that's good enough to hold his place here.
Last week: 2
3. Nick Marshall, Auburn
Team record: 5-1, 2-1 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 72-130 (55.4), 964 yards, 10 TDs, 3 INT; Rushing -- 75-492 (6.6), 4 TDs
Analysis: Auburn had a bye last week, and begins the second half of its October SEC gauntlet with a home game against South Carolina. The Gamecocks' defense is awful, so Marshall should be able to put up big numbers, perhaps both rushing and passing.
Last week: 3
4. Blake Sims, Alabama
Team record: 6-1, 3-1 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 117-176 (66.5), 1,748 yards, 13 TDs, 3 INTs; Rushing -- 40-208 (5.2), 4 TDs
Analysis: After a couple of so-so weeks, Sims was outstanding again vs. Texas A&M last week, accounting for four touchdowns in a 59-0 victory. However, the Aggies' defense is so bad, Sims will have to replicate that performance to have a chance to move up this list.
Last week: 5
5. Kenny Hill, Texas A&M
Team record: 5-3, 2-3 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 214-321 (66.7), 2,649 yards, 23 TDs, 8 INTs; Rushing -- 52-156 (3.0), 0 TDs
Analysis: It's been a steep drop for Hill, and for the Aggies, after three straight losses, each more decisive than the last. Hill has been so inconsistent of late there's even talk he might lose his job to true freshman Kyle Allen. However, until that happens, he's still better than the other nine names on this list.
Last week: 4
6. Dylan Thompson, South Carolina
Team record: 4-3, 2-3 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 146-238 (61.3), 1,839 yards, 15 TDs, 6 INTs; Rushing -- 29-21, 0.7, 4 TDs
Analysis: As expected, Thompson put up pretty big numbers in a rout of overmatched Furman last week. The Gamecocks return to SEC reality this week at Auburn, so Thompson will have a chance to play well and turn his team's season around.
Last week: 6
7. Hutson Mason, Georgia
Team record: 6-1, 4-1 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 101-146 (69.2), 1,022 yards, 10 TDs, 3 INTs; Rushing -- 25-24 (1.0), 3 TDs
Analysis: The Bulldogs continue to roll without Todd Gurley, and Mason did his part in a 45-32 victory at Arkansas last week, accounting for three touchdowns. He's been efficient if not necessarily outstanding this year, and has a bye this week to rest up for the annual battle with Florida.
Last week: 8
8. Patrick Towles, Kentucky
Team record: 4-2, 2-2 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 139-228 (61.0), 1,687 yards, 10 TDs, 4 INTs; Rushing -- 67-128 (1.9), 2 TDs
Analysis: The Wildcats' magical midseason run ended with a 34-3 thud at LSU last week, and though Towles was not especially bad, he drops one slot here. Mississippi State's secondary is exploitable, so he could throw for big yards on Saturday.
Last week: 7
9. Brandon Allen, Arkansas
Team record: 3-4, 0-4 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 107-182 (58.8), 1,293 yards, 13 TDs, 4 INT; Rushing -- 27-7 (0.3), 2 TDs
Analysis: Allen had a career day in terms of passing yards last week against Georgia last week, but much of that came in garbage time. Allen has been solid on a team that doesn't look to pass much, but at some point he needs to lead the Razorbacks to an SEC victory.
Last week: 9
10. Maty Mauk, Missouri
Team record: 5-2, 2-1 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 104-198 (52.5), 1,227 yards, 14 TDs, 9 INTs; Rushing -- 46-148 (2.6), 1 TD
Analysis: Mauk has been just plain awful throwing the ball in three straight games now, but holds steady for at least this week thanks to his team's dominant victory over Florida. If he doesn't dominate against Vanderbilt on Saturday, he's headed for a tumble.
Last week: 10
11. Anthony Jennings, LSU
Team record: 6-2, 2-2 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 64-128 (50.0), 1,048 yards, 7 TDs, 3 INT; Rushing - 57-115 (2.0), 0 TDs
Analysis: Jennings appears to have held off a mid-season challenge from freshman Brandon Harris, and played a good game against Kentucky last week. The Tigers face arguably the league's best secondary in Ole Miss on Saturday, so not sure the good times will last.
Last week: 12
12. Treon Harris, Florida
Team record: 3-3, 2-3 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 12-18 (66.7), 165, 3 TDs, 1 INTs; Rushing -- 15-51 (3.4), 1 TDs
Analysis: Back from suspension and coming off a solid performance against Missouri. Harris appears to have finally beaten out embattled senior Jeff Driskel for the starting job. Harris is a true freshman, but gives the Gators a fighting chance going forward.
Last week: 13
13. Justin Worley, Tennessee
Team record: 3-4, 0-3 SEC
Key stats: Passing -- 157-252 (62.3), 1,579 yards, 12 TDs, 8 INTs; Rushing -- 45-(-105)(-2.3), 3 TD
Analysis: Worley has a big arm, but plays behind an awful defensive line and displays questionable decision-making ability at times. He seems to be regressing this season, which is obviously not what you want to see out of a fifth-year senior.
Last week: 11
14. Johnny McCrary/Wade Freebeck, Vanderbilt
Team record: 2-5, 0-4 SEC
Key stats: McCrary, Passing -- 10-19 (62.5), 169 yards, 1 TD, 1 INTs; Rushing -- 13-(3)(3.0), 0 TDs; Freebeck, Passing -- 34-72 (47.2), 376, 1 TD, 5 INTs; Rushing -- 12-(-38) (-3.2), 0 TDs
Analysis: Patton Robinette -- by far the best quarterback on the roster -- remains out with a concussion, so Vanderbilt will again go with some combination of McCrary and Freebeck on Saturday at Missouri. Not sure either is up to the task.
