My son turns 13 next week and he wants a spinning reel for his birthday. What's a decent reel for inshore specs and reds that will hold up to sal****er use? I have been out of the game for so long that I am not sure what's good anymore. A good 6'6" rod recommendation would be great as well. I think this would be primarily used for popping shrimp under a cork.

Spinning or spin caster? No spin cater will hold up in salt. Spinning go with Penn.

Shimano Sedona on a 7' rod is my choice.

Budget would help.

My do it all spinning setup for the coast is a Shimano Stradic on 7' Waterloo salinity. I use it mainly as a loaner for friends who can't throw a baitcaster, but it'll throw everything from artificial to corks pretty well. I wouldn't go anything less than 7' for throwing popping corks.

Penn is good. I really like my Shimano Thunnus. It has taken a beating. Caught everything from Trout, Redfish, Black Drum, and Jack Crevalle

I don't mind spending money on something that will last him a few years. I don't think he needs a $400 reel, but I assume there is something that can be had for around $400 for the combo.

You mentioned being out of the game. Do you mean haven't bought new equipment or haven't done much saltwater fishing? If the latter, what's the game plan for getting him on fish?

A Penn Battle 2500 on a Waterloo Phantom would be a quality setup without breaking the bank

When I was at A&M, I fished a ton out of Port O'Connor and Seadrift. Since leaving school, I haven't done a ton of fishing down there. I am taking him to Bay Flats for his birthday. I know they have all the stuff he would need, but he also fishes a bunch at my folks place on LBJ.

I have used Penn Battle 3000 for my charter business for many years. They stand up to a lot of use..... you can spend a lot more. But the Battle would be the minimum in my opinion. I think it's Penn Battle III or IV now. If just going to be throwing lures and wade fishing for specks and reds and flounder the 2500 is great. If going to be using bait and possibly get into some over size reds or black drum the 3000 is great.
A good minimum rod would be a Berkley Lightning Rod 6'6" medium heavy for chunking big cork rig. This is what I use on my charters.
Laguna would be next step up to consider.

Shimano Vanford 3000

Laguna Liquid medium 7'

That's the best at your $400 budget for the combo

IMO the Vanford is a worthwhile upgrade to the Stradic. It is the updated Stradic Ci4

It is amazing how light the Vanford is.

Is the site monitoring software British?

I'd say salt water as a single word is used in America far more often than tt is used as slang.

Penn Battle 3 on a Falcon 7' rod. We have several of these and they've held up well for several years of beatings.

Penn Battle all the way. A couple of summers ago I lost a Penn battle over the boat in saltwater. Had a good idea of where it was but couldn't feel it. Came back to the same spot a month later with a grapple hook and to my surprise pulled it up. Still worked after month of being submerged in saltwater. Even had small oysters starting to grow on the rod. Use it to this day.

This is all I buy after seeing multiple guides using the same. Love these reels!

Best reply of this thread. You can also get Laguna or Waterloo to do custom if you want to make it real special.

I am a huge fan of the Stradic 2500. Got ~8 years of use out of my last one in the salt with basic cleaning. Just ordered a replacement and I was impressed with the new model.
