I still have some notable movies to knock out over the next couple of weeks, and into early next year, but these are my rankings so far. I wanted to get this up now, since I know people's lists here act as recommendations, especially for catch-up holiday viewing...

- Anatomy of a Fall
- The Boys in the Boat
- Dumb Money
- Fair Play
- Ferrari
- How to Blow Up a Pipeline
- The Iron Claw
- May December
- Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain
- Reptile

- The Zone of Interest

Series I still need to see (or am waiting to rank once they're finished airing):

- The Curse
- Daisy Jones & the Six
- The Gold
- Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
- Poker Face
- Special Ops: Lioness

We watch way more tv than movies, and your list pretty much captures them all. Only one I don't see that we really liked was Beef.

TV Shows

  • Blue Eyed Samurai

nothing else is even close.

Movies

Still have about 5 or 6 to go through before I pick one or two.

  • So far Past Lives" is in the lead.

Fun movies:
Dungeons Dragons/Mario/Godzilla/The Killer

Disappointments:
  • Spider-verse
  • Asteroid City

Video Games

  • Dredge
  • Dead Space (2023)

Sounds like you are going to be watching a lot of movies between now and Jan. 1
The Porkchop Express
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know it's a standard Porkchop year when I've seen no more than 1 of TC's top 10 in movies or TV shows.

I don't know where the fancy ranker box thing is on the Internet either

My Best Movies
1. Across the Spiderverse - far and away the best
2. GOTG 3
3. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
4. Super Mario Bros. Movie
5. The Marvels
6. Barbie
7. The Little Mermaid
8. Antman 3: Thank God Bill Murray was in This

Movies I was obligated to see because of parenthood (ranked in order of least amount of suckage)
1. The Haunted Mansion
2. Wish - seen while waiting for 9 hours for a flight in Orlando, still not worth it
3. Elemental - a movie I could have written the plot of in 30 minutes

Movies I never got to see because everyone else in the house is female
1. Oppenheimer
2. D&D
3. Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Movies my kids have aged out of that I am eternally grateful I will never have to see
1. Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie
2. Trolls Band Together

Movies I have watched between 7-20 minutes of on HBO at various times of night and would probably like if I watched the whole thing
1. The Flash
2. Shazam 2

Movies that I avoided watching only because my wife started a small business in 2023 and didn't have time to insist we go see
1. Aquaman 2 (so far)
2. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

Top TV Shows / Series
1. A Small Light - Nat Geo/D+: I have never seen a better show that showcases the bravery of everyday people against the Nazis. I would recommend this to everyone in the world.
2. Ahsoka: The culmination of a lot of my wishes, none more so than a live-action, perfectly represented Thrawn.
3, The Righteous Gemstones: Really hope that wasn't the end.
4. Succession: Didn't start watching it until this year, and then my wife and I binged all 5 seasons in a month or so.
5. Survivor: One of my kids watched it from start to finish with me and she loved it. It became a real centerpiece of our Friday nights and really taught her a lot about relationships. She put a countdown for the next season on her phone and wants to sign up for the show in 2030. Just the best kinda of time with a show I love and a person I love.
6, The Mandalorian: A big step back from Seasons 1 and 2 , but really appreciative of their willingness to cast Bo-Katan Krye, one of my favorite characters, into a leading role and clearly start setting up a Thrawn / Mando / Jedi movie in the future.
7. The Bad Batch Season 2: A couple of episodes featuring life inside the new Empire for Crosshair are in my top 10 all-time of SW animation
8. Loki - Took a lot of big swings and had the board in a peak-Lost type discussion mode.
9. Percy Jackson & the Olympians : Just started, but first 2 episodes were fun and very nicely un-cheesy
10. Dancing with the Stars: My whole family watched it from start to finish, really fun.

Didn't really watch much, this year. As for movies released this year, I've only seen Oppenheimer and MI: Dead Reckoning. Liked both of them a lot.

As for shows, I thought Blue Eye Samurai was fantastic. I also really enjoyed OnePiece, and am excited for both Season 2 and the anime remake they announced, seemingly cutting the fat and providing a more direct story.

1. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem: grew up on the original and dare I say this was better!!!!!

2. GotG3: most fun I've had watching a marvel movie since No Way Home….comedy got a little stale at times but still really enjoyed it

3. Mario Bros: glad I saw it….but other than the melancholy blue star that longed for death I didn't find myself laughing much….was just a safe fan service movie for one of the most popular properties in the world and I'm good with that.

4. Antman Quantumania: other than a few moments this whole movie felt weird and ignored some major plot holes….plus I'm tired of seeing teenagers super geniuses that can invent anything just for convenience….

And that's all I saw from that list this year….

I've seen one of the movies and none of the series. I think most movies these days are poorly written & not worth my time. I do watch lots of TV series, mostly Netflix, but some from other sources. But I've given up on movies.

I read this thread at 2 am last night about to go to bed and had never even heard of Beef. Turned on Netflix and was just going to put on something random to fall asleep to and then see Beef in the menu. I ended up binge watching the entire thing and suddenly the sun was up. What a great show!

My rankings of the films I've seen. It should be noted that these are not ranked in the "best" order in a snobby sense, but rather in how I enjoy it. The criteria being (1) Entertainment (2) Craft (3) Self-Awareness (4) Cinematic Experience. Because of this, action movies usually rip to the top of my list, and artsy films usually slide. This list is subject to change as more films are added in the next few months.

1. Oppenheimer
2. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
4. John Wick: Chapter 4
5. Reptile
6. Barbie
7. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

I actually thought the exact opposite. IMO, this was easily the best movie year since 2019. An all-time Nolan effort, Scorsese, Fincher, The Holdovers, Air, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Past Lives, Mission: Impossible, and a number of others. Yes, it was a crappy year for superhero movies, but I'm honestly glad we hit rock bottom in that regard, and get a reset of sorts next year.

I felt it was a bit above average. Nowhere near as bad as 2018 or 2020, but definitely not in that upper echelon of 1994 or 2016. Oppenheimer might be the best film I've seen in the past 10-15 years.
